Workforce Success Story: Gavin Reed, Defiance County

Written by: Jacklyn Wells February 4, 2025
Gavin Reed’s journey is a testament to the power of perseverance, self-advocacy, and the right support system. As a participant in the Defiance Dream Center’s Workforce Development Program, Gavin gained hands-on experience in automotive and construction training while also earning his OSHA 10 certification. But his path didn’t stop there—he was determined to build a career that aligned with his skills and aspirations.
After completing his high school credits, Gavin took the Future Plans assessment, which helped him uncover his strengths, interests, and career goals. Armed with this knowledge and guided by workforce coaching, he prepared for an interview at a local meat manufacturing company. However, instead of simply accepting the first offer, Gavin made a bold move—he used his self-advocacy skills to negotiate with his current employer, Spyker Contracting, securing a role with benefits that made it the perfect fit.
Breaking Barriers & Building Success
At MoveUp Ohio, we recognize that success isn’t just about landing a job—it’s about ensuring individuals have the tools to thrive in their roles. When Gavin faced challenges working in extreme conditions, we stepped in to provide essential gear, including insulated overalls, steel-toed boots, thermal layers, wool socks, and waterproof waders. These supplies have been a game-changer, especially as he works outdoors and tends to farm animals.
Gavin’s favorite item? The waders! Whether clearing cattails in the pond or handling outdoor tasks, they help him stay warm, dry, and comfortable. As he puts it, the thermal gear has "been a game changer!"
Gavin’s story is an inspiring example of how determination, the right training, and strong support can open doors to a fulfilling career. His journey proves that when individuals are empowered with skills, confidence, and the right resources, they don’t just find jobs—they build futures.
MoveUp Ohio is proud to be part of his success
